Joe Girardi comes to Derek Jeter’s defense, says critics of All-Star skip should have called Captain
Attention all players who criticized Derek Jeter for not showing up at the All-Star game, Joe Girardi has a message for you: Ya should’ve picked up the telephone and called the captain.
That’s what the Yankees manager said Sunday on the most recent edition of the Yankees Entertainment & Sports Network’s “The Joe Girardi Show.”
In a bizarre exchange with Kimberly Jones, the Yankees manager said players who dared to take issue with his shortstop had done Jeter wrong.
“It’s unfair. If players had an issue they should’ve called Derek and really found out what’s really going on with this instead of saying, ‘You should be here (in Arizona)’” Girardi said.
How many players around baseball actually have Jeter’s cell phone number? One MLB source laughed when asked. “I’d venture to guess not many (players have the number),” the source said. “How many Yankee beat writers are there, 10, 11? It’s safe to say none of them have Jeter’s number.”
